The Roany Pony

So who is the horse I was riding in the last post?

Loretta (on right) a bay roan grade mare (unregistered AQHA.)

She only has about a month of riding on her but is doing very well, gaining experience on trails and in the arena.

She has a great, calm, mind and a sweet loving personality. Her owner calls her a future kid's horse.

No that is not me standing on Loretta, I am not brave enough to do that!

I kinda fell in love with her from the get go, her bay face and white star and sweet expression.

And she is to be for sale.

And yes, I'm thinking about buying her.

But I am still unsure. Two horses are a lot more work and expense than one. And quite frankly, I need to get a job before I get another horse.

And because she is young, she still has a lot to learn. From the 5 times I've ridden her, I feel like we could work well together and I have resources to help me with her training should I need it.

My Boy will always be my boy and he is going nowhere. But at 17, with the arthritis in his hocks, I can't do some of the things I'd love to do with a younger horse. And it would be nice to have a spare that I could ride when friends or family visit.

What do you all think? Does one person really need two horses?

Well I have three! LOL Now that the kids are moved on, and my Hubby does not ride, they are all mine! And yes it is three times the work! Stalls in the Winter, hauling hay, fly spray and masks. But I love them! Two old ones and my 11 year old.

Gorgeous - and just think how pleased your boy will be to have company. He might even let you catch him easier?

If I had the means, I would do it in a heartbeat. She's got a vey kind eye. I wouldn't say that it is twice the work, but more like twice the fun!

I would be the last person to ask, at last count I owned 17 (stallions broodmares and saddle horses ) more specifically I have almost always had at least 2 saddle horse and until the last few years have ridden them all and kept them fit . But owning property helps . If you can afford it and keep them working a young up and comer as "My Boy"gets older is a great idea

Two is the perfect number for one person! She's a beautiful mare! I used to ride two horses at once to make sure to keep them all in shape; I would ride one and pony the other, then switch halfway and ride the other horse.

Will you take some advice from a cousin? Well, here goes...
You know that My Boy has the arthritis, which will cause him discomfort in some of the things you do. You know that you will need a younger pony to do those things eventually. (maybe not now, but definitely in the next couple of years.) Where are you going to find a better suited pony for you? I know that you are aware that ponies like the roany pony dont just pop up when you need them. I encourage you to do what you have to do to secure this fine mare for yourself. Or just wait and take what you can get. Roany Pony gets my vote! She's a dandy and you need to stick with the spots, even if the spots are tiny.

She does have the sweetest face!!

Sometimes when I am caring for 2 horses I feel a little like I am cheating on one or the other :) I'm more of a one-horse kind of girl, but love helping the rest of my family members ride their horses (aka, sharing!)

The question is not do you need two horses, the question is do you want to keep riding. The only way to just keep one horse is to move the older one out when it's past its useful years, and I don't subscribe to that practice.

is that a real question, Rancj Girl?? Here is my very real answer: YES, if you have room another horse is the perfect idea. Horses need to be a part of a herd, so why not add to the small one you've got? Give your Boy some time to relax his joints. And with such a young horse you know you aren't buying someone else's screw-up or problems because there aren't any!!! And, who doesn't love a roan with a bay face???? Are you kidding?? I'm already pretending she is yours.

I dont think I can fairly answer that question either, she is such a cute horse and she seems so nice and quiet!

I have 9 right now and while I have the luxury of land to keep them on so its cheaper, and I should sell some, but I cant imagine having only one really.

What's one more?

(Says the lady who has 7 head of horses in her backyard and 22 more in SD...LOL.)

I say go for it! Like you've said, and many commenters have said before me, Your Boy isn't getting any younger. He'd probably appreciate having a few less miles put on him in the coming years and he'll probably be able to be ridden a few years longer because of it!

Good horses like this roan don't come along everyday. If you like her, have the space and the finances for her, I say do it!

Buttercupgirl is now officially retired and I am finding myself in the "do I or don't I" boat for getting a 2nd horse. They'll never take the place of Buttercup but I do want to continue to ride...

I tried commenting by my phone last night, but it obviously didn't go through.
You and I have already talked about the roany pony, so you know my feelings on the matter. I truly believe that she has a really good mind and would be a great horse for you. Let me just say that with Brandy's issue's now, I am really glad I have my future riding horse in MY pasture right now! No horse searching needed here. Chance fell into my lap for a reason, and I believe that the roany pony fell into yours for a reason also......

I think she's a cutie, and believe me doing the "horse shopping" thing is exhausting... If you come across "the right horse" you should probably do all you can to aquire her. Especially if I lived on a ranch like you do, you have half the battle won!
